Abdulsalami Abubakar - Nigeria Politics Today

Born June 13, 1942 in Minna, Niger State, to Hausa parents, Abdulsalami Abubakar was educated at Native Authority Primary School in Minna, the Provincial Secondary School in Bida, and finally the Technical Institute, Kaduna. Afterwards, he joined the military. Abubakar led Nigeria’s contingent in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon and eventually rose to the position of Chief of Defence Staff.

Abdulsalami Abubakar is not run-of-the-mill. He is exceptional. The distinction is critical when discussing the man widely acknowledged as one of Nigeria’s finest elder statesmen and political revolutionaries. His foray in Nigeria’s civic years emphasizes his value as a representative of new realities and possibilities. Tunji Braithwaite - Nigeria News

Tunji Braithwaite was born in 1933, the youngest son of eight children. He was educated at the prestigious C.M.S Grammar School, entering the school’s Preparatory Section in 1946 and completing his education there in 1953. He proceeded to sit for his A Levels at the London University at Kennington College in 1955 and enrolled in 1957/58 as a Law student at the Council of Legal Education, London. He was admitted into Lincoln’s Inn that same year and graduated as a barrister in 1960.

From his early career as a brilliant young lawyer through to his old age, Braithwaite was constantly confronted with numerous social ills and the pervading corruption which have become entrenched hallmarks of Nigeria. He began his legal career in 1961 with the establishment of the law firm Tunji Braithwaite & Co and quickly earned himself a reputation of being one of the brightest and best lawyers of his day.

With an impressive clientele base comprising the likes of multinational giants Swissair, BASF, Hoescht and Julius Berger, he built up an an enviable law practice and carved a niche for himself as a leading litigation lawyer. Consequently, he successfully handled several landmark cases including the celebrated Treasonable Felony trials of 1962/1963 and State vs Eyo which brought further acclaim to the firm and later in 1974, remarking on his conduct of State vs Olabisi Ajala, Chief Obafemi Awolowo said, “I think Tunji is a brave lawyer of whom our profession should be proud”.Continue reading

Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi (3 March 1924 – 29 July 1966) was a senior Nigerian military officer and the first Nigerian Military Head of State. He seized power in the ensuing chaos following the 15 January 1966 military coup, serving as the Nigerian Head of State from 16 January 1966 until his assassination on 29 July 1966 by a group of mutinous Northern army soldiers who revolted against his government in what was popularly called the July Counter Coup.

In 1942, Aguiyi-Ironsi joined the Nigerian Army, at the rank of a private with the seventh battalion. He got promoted in 1946 to the rank of company sergeant major. Also in 1946, Aguiyi-Ironsi was sent on an officer training course in Staff College, Camberley, England. In 1949, after completion of his course at Camberley, he was promoted second lieutenant of Royal West African Frontier Force.

Aguiyi-Ironsi was promoted to captain in 1953 and again promoted to Major in 1955. He was part of the officers who served as Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Nigeria’s equerry at the time she visited Nigeria in 1956.Continue reading
