Described as “Congress’ leading proponent of American manufacturing,” Brown supports a national manufacturing policy that would invest in manufacturing innovation, strengthen our component supply chain, connect workers with emerging industries, and align our trade policies to promote our national interests. He is also working with Ohio’s universities, entrepreneurs, and community stakeholders to use Ohio’s resources to create new jobs in high-growth industries and make Ohio a national leader in clean energy manufacturing.

And as a long-time advocate for fair trade, Senator Brown has stood up to presidents of both parties on shortsighted trade agreements that ship U.S. jobs overseas. He led the bipartisan opposition to NAFTA in 1993 – as a freshman in the U.S. House of Representatives – and to CAFTA in 2005. Sen. Brown is working on trade policies that promote our workers, small businesses, and manufacturers while creating jobs and expanding markets through an aggressive export promotion strategy.

Ohio voters elected Sherrod Brown to the United States Senate

In 2006, Ohio voters elected Sherrod Brown to the United States Senate with one of the largest margins over an incumbent in U.S. history. Today he serves on committees key to Ohio’s future: the Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, the Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee (Ranking Member).

No one fights harder for Ohio’s working families or takes his job more seriously than Sherrod. It’s a reputation he earned through his career in public service. When Sherrod won a seat in the General Assembly, he became the youngest person elected to Ohio’s House of Representatives. He went on to serve as Ohio’s Secretary of State and represented Ohio’s 13th District in the U.S. House.

In the Senate, Sherrod gives voice to Ohioans who have been left behind by the special interests that dominate Washington, and is fighting for an economy that restores the value of hard work in America.

Sherrod works across the aisle to stand up for every Ohioan. He has introduced more than 200 bipartisan bills — over one third with his Ohio colleague, Senator Rob Portman — in this Congress alone. From 2015 to 2016 (the 114th Congress), Sherrod ranked 4th on a list of Senators who had passed the most laws — despite serving in the minority.

Throughout his career, Sherrod has led the fight against wrong-headed trade deals that have devastated Ohio’s manufacturing sector and eliminated good-paying American jobs. Since President Trump’s inauguration, Sherrod has worked with the administration on key trade issues, and has laid out a four-point plan to renegotiate NAFTA to secure a deal that meets his standard of putting Ohio workers first.

But he will hold anyone — including President Trump or his Democratic colleagues — accountable for keeping their promises to the people who put them in office. That’s why Sherrod strongly opposes Washington Republicans’ efforts to sabotage healthcare coverage and increase costs on hardworking families.

Washington politicians with taxpayer-funded coverage should never rip coverage away from Ohioans who are battling cancer or finally getting treatment for their opioid addiction. As a matter of principle, Sherrod refused to accept the congressional healthcare plan until affordable health insurance was available to Ohioans. He continues to stand up to insurance and pharmaceutical company lobbyists in order to make healthcare more affordable for seniors, workers, and small businesses.

Sherrod’s father was a small-town doctor who made house calls and treated everyone, regardless of their ability to pay; his mother was a teacher who taught her sons that the role of government was to help the little guy. Those values still drive Sherrod.

He was born and raised in Mansfield, Ohio — where he attended local public schools, played basketball and baseball in high school, and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Along with his brothers Bob and Charlie, Sherrod became a lifelong Cleveland Indians fan.
