Jeb Bush - USA Politics

Born on February 11, 1953, in Midland, Texas, Jeb Bush is the son of George H.W. Bush, the 41st U.S. president, and the brother of George W. Bush, the 43rd U.S. president. Jeb Bush moved up the ranks in Florida politics in the 1980s and ’90s before securing the state’s governorship in 1998. The Republican remained as Florida’s governor until 2007. The following year, many speculated that he’d run for the U.S. Senate, but that did not occur. In June 2015, Bush announced his run for the U.S. presidency, only to bow out in February 2016.

Bush left Texas and moved to Florida in the early 1980s to work as a real estate developer and broker. In 1987 and 1988, he held his first government post, serving as Florida’s secretary of commerce. Bush made his first run for public office as the Republican candidate for the state’s governorship in 1994. He lost the election by a small margin to Governor Lawton Chiles. Shamila Batohi - South Africa

Shamila Batohi started her public service as a junior prosecutor in the Chatsworth magistrate’s court in 1986 and steadily rose through the ranks to become the Director of Public Prosecutions in KwaZulu-Natal. She was seconded to the Investigation Task Unit established by President Nelson Mandela in 1995 and later served as the first regional head of the Directorate of Special Operations based in KwaZulu-Natal. For much of the last decade, she has served as a Senior Legal Adviser to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.

In 1995, Shamila Batohi was appointed by former president Nelson Mandela to be part of the multi-disciplinary team mandated to investigate hit squad activities within the police service during apartheid.Continue reading

Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was born on 13 November 1953 to a family of modest means in the southeastern state of Tabasco. Lopez Obrador worked for the state’s indigenous affairs bureau in the 1970s. As a boy in the state of Tabasco, he played center field on the local baseball team and sold imported U.S. clothes at his father’s store. It was the 1960s, and some of his friends thought López Obrador might join Mexico’s burgeoning business community.

In his early 20s, López Obrador took a job working with an indigenous group called the Chontal Maya, some of Mexico’s poorest people, who happened to be sitting atop billions of dollars in untapped petroleum. The unfairness enraged him. He lived in a dirt-floor shack and slept on a hammock with his young wife. Former first lady Barbara Bush, wife of President George H.W. Bush and mother of President George W. Bush, founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Barbara Bush — the only woman besides Abigail Adams to be both a wife and a mother to a president of the United States — was born in New York City on June 8, 1925.

In 1945 she married George H.W. Bush, who became vice president in 1981 and president in 1989, the same year she started the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

In 2001 her son George W. Bush was inaugurated president. The former first lady passed away at her home in Houston, Texas, on April 17, 2018.Continue reading

George Herbert Walker Bush (George H.W. Bush) was born on June 12, 1924, in Milton, Massachusetts, to Dorothy Walker Bush and Prescott Bush, a banker who went on to represent Connecticut in the U.S. Senate from 1952 to 1963. The younger Bush was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut, and graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, in 1942.

George Herbert Walker Bush served as the 41st U.S. president from 1989 to 1993. He also was a two-term U.S. vice president under Ronald Reagan, from 1981 to 1989. Bush, a World War II naval aviator and Texas oil industry executive, began his political career in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1967. During the 1970s, he held a variety of government posts, including CIA director. In 1988, Bush defeated Democratic rival Michael Dukakis to win the White House. In office, he launched successful military operations against Panama and Iraq; however, his popularity at home was marred by an economic recession, and in 1992 he lost his bid for re-election to Bill Clinton. Dawn Butler was born 3 November 1969 to expats from Jamaica, and is one of six children. She worked on a market stall and in a bakery in her youth but started her career as a computer programmer/systems analyst and then working as a trade unionist. Her desire to enter politics came from a deep rooted commitment to address inequality.

Elected as the Member of Parliament for Brent South on 5 May 2005 Dawn’s maiden speech described her constituency as a “shining example of integration at its best”. Dawn became the first elected African-Caribbean woman to become a Government Minister in the UK.

Dawn ran a hugely successful campaign in 2015 and won Brent Central with a majority of nearly 20,000 – giving the largest vote swing in Britain at that election. She was again successful in the 2017 election, winning 73.1% of the vote.Continue reading

Mary Lou McDonald was born in Dublin on May 1, 1969 and is the new president of Sinn Fein. Her father, Patrick, was a very successful surveyor, married to Joan. She has two brothers: Bernard, a scientist and Patrick, a patent lawyer. Her sister, Joanne, is a teacher. She was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, the University of Limerick and Dublin City University, studying English Literature, European Integration Studies and Human Resource management.

After leaving university, the politician ran for the leadership unopposed and had served as deputy leader since February 2008. She has been a Member of Dáil Éireann, the equivalent of an MP, for Dublin Central since 2011 and had previously served as an MEP for the Dublin constituency from 2004 to 2009.Continue reading

Abiola Ajimobi was born on 16 December 1949 to the Ajimobi of Ibadan at Oja-Oba, Ibadan. It was a political family. His grandfather was Sobaloju of Ibadan Land (a chief in the royal court of Ibadan). His uncle, Hon. N.A. Ajimobi was minister of works and transport in the Western Region.
